Seniors Hope McDonald and Kole Mathison have been named as the recipients of the Carmel High School Mental Attitude Award. The awards are considered the highest recognition given by the athletic department each year. Nominations and voting are conducted by all varsity head coaches. Hope McDonald played four years with the softball program. She is a four year letter winner. She has helped lead the Greyhounds to record breaking offensive years. Hope leads the team in batting average, singles, doubles, runs batted in, runs scored, slugging percentage, and second in home runs. She finished her junior year top 3 in all offensive statistics. Defensively, she starts at first base and plays anywhere in the outfield as needed. McDonald is known as a tremendous leader with her teammates and always has a positive attitude. Hope will attend Coastal Carolina on an athletic scholarship to play softball. Kole Mathison graduates from Carmel as the most decorated runner in school history. He was the IHSAA cross country state champion in 2022 and won the 1600 and 3200 at the IHSAA state meet in 2022. Kole also captured the Champs Sports Cross Country National Championship this year. He led the Greyhounds to state championships once in track & field and once in cross country. The Greyhounds also finished as state runners-up twice in cross country during his career. He is a two-time Indiana Gatorade Cross Country Athlete of the year. He continually demonstrates support of his teammates in both sports and uses his platform as an accomplished runner to encourage others for the overall benefit of the sport. Kole will attend Colorado University in Boulder next fall and run for the Buffaloes.
