Carmel High School proudly announces the renaming of its basketball court to “Bill Shepherd Court” in honor of William "Bill" Shepherd, whose impact on Carmel athletics is woven into the school’s rich history. Located in the Eric Clark Activity Center, the newly named court pays homage to Bill Shepherd’s remarkable contributions as a coach, athletic director, and mentor, as well as to the Shepherd family's enduring legacy in Carmel basketball. “Bill Shepherd was instrumental in shaping Carmel athletics,” said Dr. Michael Beresford, Superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools. “Naming our court ‘Bill Shepherd Court’ honors his legacy and the inspiration he provided to countless student-athletes. His influence, along with the dedication of the entire Shepherd family, has left a lasting mark on our school and community.” During his three-decade career as Carmel’s athletic director, Bill Shepherd oversaw the growth of Greyhound athletics into a powerhouse, leading Carmel teams to 49 IHSAA team state championships. As head coach of the boys’ basketball team from 1958 to 1970, he brought Carmel to the state championship game and led the team to an incredible 50-game home winning streak, creating an era of excellence that remains part of the program’s foundation today. “Dedicating this court to Bill Shepherd is a tribute to the high standards he set for Carmel athletics,” shared Jim Inskeep, Carmel High School Athletic Director. “Bill’s leadership and commitment laid the foundation for the success and excellence that have become hallmarks of our athletic programs, reflecting the pride and passion that Carmel athletics bring to our community.” The Shepherd family’s legacy continues to be celebrated in Carmel athletics. Sons Billy and David Shepherd followed in their father’s footsteps, each earning the prestigious title of Indiana Mr. Basketball in 1968 and 1970, respectively—the only two players in Carmel’s history to receive the honor. Billy went on to become an All-American at Butler University and played professionally in the ABA. David holds the IHSAA single-class tournament state championship game record for points (40) and the single-season IHSAA scoring record (1079 points in 1969-1970). Principal Dr. Tim Phares added, “The Shepherd family’s influence is deeply embedded in our school’s history. Dedicating this court to Bill Shepherd is a celebration of a legacy that continues to inspire our students, families, and the entire Carmel community.” A ceremony to honor the renaming will take place Saturday, January 11th at halftime of the Westfield boys basketball game.
