The Carmel vs Westfield game was the story of two styles of play tonight in Westfield and there is a good chance this will be repeated in IHSAA sectional 9 next week. The Greyhounds created just enough offense in the first half, one goal by Olivia Cebalo, and played lockdown defense coupled with outstanding play from goalkeeper Mary Grace Knapp to hold the lead through the first 40 minutes. Half number two was much the same with the Hounds defending well and looking for counter attack chances. Finally, with 6 1/2 minutes left, Kate Klinginsmith scored directly from a free lick to push the Carmel lead to 2-0. The lesson of this game is don't relax and stop doing what got you the lead. With about 4 minutes left and victory in sight, the girls allowed a free kick and the Shamrocks made us pay, cutting the lead to 2-1. The last 4 minutes were chaotic, with Westfield testing Knapp multiple times. With less than a minute to go, Carmel advanced the ball into the Westfield end and saw out the match. Klinginsmith continued her goal scoring tear with her fourth goal in as many games while Cebalo now leads the team with 16 goals. Vaughn Rohrbacher added an assist. Klinginsmith also assisted for her 6th of the year, tops on the team. Knapp lead the defense with 8 saves. The win moves Carmel's record to 11-3-2 with the only losses coming against the #1 and #2 team in Indiana and the #1 team in Kentucky. The girls feel they are well prepared to start tournament play next week against Lawrence Central at Sectional 9 host Zionsville's soccer stadium. The game will be played Tuesday, October 8 at 6 pm.
