Girls Cross Country Wins LaVern Early Bird to Start Season

The Carmel girls cross country TEAM competed in the Valley Cross Kick-off meet on Saturday, August 17 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course against competitors from throughout the State. On a sunny, humid morning in Terre Haute, Indiana, the Greyhounds won both Varsity and Junior Varsity competitions against a field of 40 teams, scoring 37 and 15 points in each race respectively. Junior Sadie Foley (2nd) led a balanced attack from all 12 runners in the Varsity race, with the 5 scoring individuals placing in the top 11 overall. The remaining top 7 finishers in the field of 361 were Larkin Taylor (5th), Olivia Mundt (9th), Annabel Pollert (10th), Margo Halle (11th), Kaitlyn Oshimura (16th), and Katy Dascoli (25th). Senior Charlotte Konow won the Junior Varsity race in dominating fashion, leading wire-to-wire. The Senior earned the 9th best Greyhound time on a day where the Greyhounds had 94 total finishers, and pulled along a strong contingent of runners to sweep the top 5 scoring places, the top 6 overall, and 10 out of the top 11 places! Rounding out the top 7 were Maija Gilhooly (2nd), Noelle Avila (3rd), Ellie Smith (4th), Katie Zhuravlev (5th), Ella Weaver (6th), and Emma Kistler (8th). Up next for the Greyhounds is the 4k John Cleland Zionsville Early Bird meet at Northview on August, 24.
