Dougherty & Yang Carmel Mental Attitude Recipients

Seniors Grace Dougherty and Jonathan (Jonny) Yang have been named as the recipients of the Carmel High School Mental Attitude Award. The awards are considered the highest recognition given by the athletic department each year. Nominations and voting are conducted by all varsity head coaches. Grace Dougherty swam four years with the swimming ad diving program. She is a four year letter winner and individual state meet qualifier. Grace was a member of three state championship relay teams during her career. The Greyhounds also extended their National Record for consecutive state championships during her time in the program to 38 straight years. She led the Champions Together Swimming Relays and was elected team captain by her peers. Dougherty is known for her positive attitude and encouraging words on the pool deck. Grace will attend UCLA on an athletic scholarship to continue swimming. Jonny Yang played number one singles for the Greyhounds tennis program. He was a First Team All-State selection and was a member of two state championship teams. Jonny started a STEM Academy that provides tutoring and online courses for other students. He was also involved in student government and several Academic clubs. Yang was awarded the IHSAA State Mental Attitude Award at the conclusion of this year’s state finals. His 4.76 GPA includes 49 Honors, IB, Project Lead the Way, and Advanced Placement courses during his high school years. Jonny will attend Harvard University in the Fall.
