The boys track & field team opened the outdoor season on a beautiful mid-March evening against rival Fishers. With the two throwing events to be contested on Thursday (weather dependent), Fishers leads the Greyhounds in the team score, 65-49. The 'Hounds started and ended the meet with relay victories. The 4x800 squad of freshman Jonah Kaul, sophomore Matthan Lemon, junior Cohen Levy and freshman Trevor Walton scored a narrow victory over another Carmel team when Walton overtook classmate Ben Meisner in the final lap in a very close race. The 4x400 team of seniors Adi Naren, Adom Quist, Garrett Fuller and junior Michael Delaney won in 3:33.84 with a two-and-a-half-second gap over the Tigers. With both teams holding out some key athletes in favor of upcoming indoor competitions, the meet still featured two of Indiana's premiere hurdlers. Fishers senior Tyler Tarter won the 110 high hurdles in 14.50 and Quist won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 40.39; Tarter and Quist were both All-State in the 110s last spring and figure to be among the contenders in 2024. The highlight of the night for Carmel came late in the meet with a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 as 400-meter specialists Gabe LaBoyteaux, Cole Taylor and Andrew Moss stepped down to the half-lap distance with LaBoyteaux winning in 23.23 ahead of the 23.44 of Taylor, who had earlier finished second to Tarter in the 400. Other event winners for Carmel were sophomore Gabe Davis in the long jump (19'9) and sophomore Dean Watson in the pole vault (11'6). Sophomore Zach Flint utilized a big negative split (5:12-5:05) to finish second in the 3200 in his first attempt at that distance. The Greyhounds' next varsity team competition will be the HSR Finals--an unofficial indoor state meet--on March 23. The next outdoor track meet is scheduled for Wednesday, March 27 at Plainfield.
